Effects of Taping Method with Joint Massage on Pain, ROM of Knee Joint and ADL in Elderly

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the effects of the taping method with joint massage on pain, ROM of knee joint and ADL in elderly.

Method: This study was set up by the one group pretest-posttest design. The subjects were 30 elderly who registered H senior welfare center in D city. The data collection and treatment were performed from May 18th to June 15th, 2005. The measuring instrument of knee pain was numerical pain rating scales form 0 to 10, ROM of knee joint was measured with goniometer and ADL was measured by questionnaire of 24 items by 5 scales. The treatment was conducted two times a week for 4 weeks. Joint massage was conducted for 5 minutes every day. After 4 weeks, The scores of pain, ROM and ADL were measured. The data collected were analyzed paired t-test using SPSS Win. Ver. 12.0.

Results: The results of this study were as follows:
First, the score of knee pain was significantly decreased after taping method with joint massage(Lt: t=4.6, p=0.000, Rt: t=8.35, p=0.000). Second, the angle of flexion of knee joint was partly increased(Lt: t=2.40, p=0.024, Rt: t=-0.76, p=0.450), and that of extension of knee joint was significantly decreased after treatment than before(Lt: t=3.80, p=0.001, Rt: t=2.66, p=0.013). Third, the score of ADL was not increased after treatment than before(t=1.96, p=0.061).

Conclusion: Based of these findings, the taping method with joint massage was proved taping method with joint massage was effective to relief pain for elderly.
